From Hotel City Villach you can be in the centre of winter fun in no time at all! Whether you want to take it easy on the cross-country ski trail or conquer the mountains on a ski tour – both are possible here.
Cross-country skiing: Fresh air and flow
Nordic sports can be practised all year round in the Villach Alpen Arena, but winter is of course the most exciting time! The cross-country skiing season starts on 7 December. For all those who want to take it easy: At the Dreiländereck, you can glide along the classic cross-country trail or the skating trail over 10 kilometres – perfect for beginners and pros alike. In the Dobratsch Nature Park, a 5-kilometre circuit through the snow-covered countryside awaits. Or at our nearby Italian and Slovenian neighbours. Senza confini.
Ski tours: ascent, views, adrenalin
For ski touring fans, it gets really hot on the Dobratsch from Heiligengeist. 1,253 metres in altitude to burn off energy, challenging, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Julian and Gailtal Alps. Descend through the terrain. Or up to the Gerlitze – from Klösterle through the forest. You glide elegantly down the well-groomed piste into the valley. There is a charge for this. The view from the Sonnenberg to the Karawanken and lakes is free!
Fancy something more cosy? The alpine trail on the Dobratsch leads from the Rosstratte to the summit at a leisurely pace – less strenuous, but no less impressive.

Our opinion: Winter hiking and snowshoeing in Villach – fresh air, fantastic views and a pure nature experience!
Ice skating or tobogganing – action on runners and sledges!
Tobogganing: fun from top to bottom!
Admittedly, the ascent with the toboggan in tow can be a bit strenuous – but the descent into the valley makes up for it! On the Rosstratte in the Dobratsch Nature Park, even the little ones will have fun. For young and old, there is the 8.4 km long natural snow toboggan run at the Dreiländereck – endless tobogganing fun through forest clearings and snow-covered forests.
Ice time on Villach town hall square
Free ice skating fun awaits you on Villach’s town hall square. Forgot your skates? No problem – you can hire them on site. And when it’s really cold and the Carinthian lakes freeze over, there’s the ultimate highlight: ice skating on natural ice! Perhaps at the nearby, idyllic Lake Aichwald – here your skates will glide across the reflective ice surface as if by magic. Which lakes are open? Just ask at the hotel reception!
